After a filing, USCIS mails a receipt notice — Form I-797C — carrying a 13-character receipt number: three letters followed by ten digits. That number identifies the case in every USCIS tool, which makes the receipt notice one of the most important documents in the case. It belongs somewhere safe, and the number belongs somewhere you can find it.
Case Status Online and the USCIS account
Case Status Online at egov.uscis.gov shows the case's current status by receipt number, no account needed. A USCIS online account adds more: notices arrive electronically instead of waiting on the mail, some case types show more detailed status, and secure messages can be sent about a pending case. Processing times: what 'normal' currently means
USCIS publishes processing times by form and office at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times. That tool — not any number printed on a website, including this one — is the honest answer to 'how long is this taking': times vary by form, by office, and by month. The same tool computes the date a specific case becomes eligible for an 'outside normal processing time' inquiry.

When the case is outside normal times
Once the processing-times tool says a case is outside normal time, USCIS provides an inquiry channel: a service request through e-Request, with the USCIS Contact Center as the phone alternative. An inquiry is a question, not an accelerator — it asks USCIS to look at the case, and it is the provided mechanism for doing exactly that. A case with a genuinely unusual posture — long past normal times with no response, or status messages that don't match the notices received — is worth a conversation with a licensed immigration attorney.
